BVI patent protection is obtained by RE-REGISTRATION of an existing granted UK patent. There is no independent BVI patent grant: the Registry conducts no novelty search and no substantive examination, and there is nothing to draft or prosecute locally. The statutory fees are US$100 to re-register a patent in the BVI and US$50 a year to renew it. Because protection derives from the underlying UK patent, the effective term tracks that patent — a UK patent runs 20 years from filing, subject to its own renewals — and the BVI charges only the re-registration and annual renewal fees.
