Tax Registration in Nigeria

Registration of the company with FIRS — the Tax Identification Number is issued through FIRS on incorporation, after which the company is registered for Companies Income Tax and, where it makes taxable supplies, for VAT at the standard rate of 7.5%. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (signed 26 June 2025, effective 1 January 2026) CIT is a two-tier system: 0% for a small company (turnover of NGN 50,000,000 or less AND fixed assets of NGN 250,000,000 or less) and 30% for every other company, with a 4% Development Levy on assessable profits from which small and non-resident companies are exempt. There is no intermediate 20% band under the new Act. Employers separately register for PAYE with the State Internal Revenue Service of the employee's state of residence — PAYE is a state tax, not a FIRS one.
