Patent Registration in Sri Lanka
Patent prosecution with NIPO under the Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003 — a company applicant pays Rs 8,142 (VAT-inclusive) to apply, an individual Rs 3,393 and a student Rs 1,357, with a Rs 1,357 request to refer the application to a local examiner. A patent runs 20 years from the filing date. An annual (renewal) fee is payable from the second year through to the twentieth, twelve months before each year's expiry, with a six-month grace period on a surcharge. A foreign applicant must be represented by an agent resident in Sri Lanka (s.54(c)) and file a power of attorney.
