Patent Registration in Georgia
Georgian national invention patent prosecution with Sakpatenti. Fees are denominated in USD and paid in the GEL equivalent: 90 USD for examination as to form, 90 USD for substantive examination, 60 USD for publication of up to 30 pages, and 200 USD for registration and issue of the patent covering the first two years (a utility model is 170 USD for the same first two years), paid after the grant decision. Annuities then run from year 3 on a rising schedule — 50 USD a year for years 3–5 and 70 USD a year for years 6–8, continuing to rise through to year 20. Reductions apply by applicant type: 20% for electronic filing through the registration stage, 70% for educators, research institutions and inventors, and 90% for students, pupils and retirees. The term is 20 years. A foreign applicant without permanent residence or a seat in Georgia MUST act through a registered Georgian patent attorney. Georgia is a PCT member and Sakpatenti validates European patents under a validation agreement with the EPO; a utility model (kasuili modeli) is the faster, cheaper alternative.
