Canadian patent prosecution with CIPO on a two-tier fee schedule: a 'small entity' — an applicant with fewer than 100 employees, or a university — that files a valid small-entity declaration pays roughly half the standard fee. Filing is CAD 595.06 standard or CAD 241.24 small entity; examination must be separately requested at CAD 1,190.13 standard or CAD 482.48 small entity (falling to CAD 297.00 / CAD 117.94 where an international search report is used); and the final fee on allowance is CAD 446.03 standard or CAD 181.20 small entity. Maintenance fees are payable annually from the second anniversary and escalate — CAD 134.02 a year for years 2 to 4, CAD 297.00 for years 5 to 9 and CAD 372.05 for years 10 to 14 at the standard rate. The schedule runs to a 20-year term from filing. Fees rose about 2.7% on 1 January 2026. Corporations and other non-individuals generally must act through a registered patent agent, and a non-resident agent must appoint a Canadian-resident associate — so a foreign applicant will in practice need a Canadian patent agent.

Small-entity declaration
